About the role
Vehicle Mechanic — Leicester and East Midlands. Self-employed profit-share role, not a wage. You keep 25% of every job KJ Mechanics routes to you. We generate the customer demand, price the work and hand you a booked, priced job. You'll work on light vehicles (cars and vans up to 3.5t): interim/full/major services, diagnostics (OBD, live data), brakes, clutches, timing belts and chains, suspension, MOT preparation, and warranty work on partner-account fleets. You can work from your own bay or from KJ's partner workshop unit depending on the mix you want. Typical day is 3–5 jobs, dispatched via the KJ portal with the customer complaint, VRM, mileage, agreed scope and price. Tickets range from £60 for a light service up to £1,200+ for a timing belt + water pump. Suits an experienced mechanic (Level 3 or time-served) with own tools and diagnostics. Not for MOT testing itself — MOT authority sits with KJ's tester at the partner site.
Responsibilities
- Complete interim, full and major services to manufacturer schedule
- Diagnose faults using OBD, live data and manufacturer service info
- Replace brakes, clutches, timing belts/chains, suspension components
- Prepare vehicles for MOT and complete post-MOT rectification

- Flag scope changes back to KJ before proceeding for customer approval
- Keep the bay clean and consumables tracked
Requirements
- Time-served or NVQ Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
- Own hand and diagnostic tools (or use of KJ workshop kit at the partner unit)
- Full UK driving licence and right to work in the UK
- Public liability insurance
- Smartphone for the KJ portal
- Customer-facing manner for handover conversations
How working with KJ actually works
From apply to first paid job — four honest steps
- 1
Apply in 60 secs
One tap on this page. No CV wall, no cover letter. Just your name, trade and coverage area.
- 2
Sign your KJ contract
Plain-English self-employed profit-share agreement — 25–50% of job value depending on the role. E-signed. No tie-in, no exclusivity trap.
- 3
Log in to the KJ Portal
See the jobs allocated to you: address, scope, customer notes, agreed price. Accept the ones you want, decline the ones you don't.
- 4
Do the work, get paid your share
Complete the job, mark it done in the portal. KJ invoices the customer. Your share lands on the regular payment cycle — no chasing, no unpaid quotes.
The KJ Portal is rolling out through 2026 — until then, early hires are onboarded and dispatched directly by the KJ ops team. Same profit-share, same transparency.
Why KJ, not a company job
A plumber does 3–4 jobs a day; a surveyor 2–4; a solicitor a handful of matters. The client pays hundreds — often thousands. You take home a fraction. The company keeps the rest.
